If the 'writing is on the wall' for an individual or company, it looks like they are going to fail or go out of business.

If you 'pull strings' you use important people you know to help you get what you want.

A 'square meal' is a big mael that consists of all the otems of food you need to stay healthy.

b) I'd make sure you make enough food if Sma's coming to dinner. He has a very healthy appetite.

If you have a 'healthy appetite' you eat well.


a) I think you worry too much. Most children have a sweet tooth and the occasional bar of chocolate won't hurt them.

b) Yes, I must admit to having a sweet tooth. I often treat myself to an ice cream cake when I get the chance.

If someone has 'a sweet tooth' they enjoy eating things like sweets and cake.

To be 'short of breath' means to be unable to breath easily.

If someone is 'as fit as a fiddle' they are very healthy.

If you 'work your way to the top' you move up through the ranks to a senior level of the organisation.

If you 'talk shop' you talk about the job when away from work.


a) There's a rumour going around that the proposed reorganisation is meant to weed out the lazy workers.

If you 'weed something out' you remove it.

If you say, 'your guess is as good as mine', you're making it clear you don't know a answer to a question.


a) I think it's on the cards that they'll win the cup this year. They've spent so much money on new players they can't fail to win.

b) A rise in prices is on the cards following a series of strikes in the industry.

If you say something is 'on the cards' you think it is very likely to happen.


a) I'm sorry, but there's not a hope in hell of me getting the job done today. I've got too much on.

b) They don't have a hope in hell of winning the next election. Have you seen that latest opinion poll?

If there's 'not a hope in hell' of something happening, it is almost certainly not going to occur.

jack of all trades, one-man band, crack the whip

a) Antonio is a jack of all trades. I'm sure he'll be able to do your bathroom if you ask him.

b) It's all very well being a jack of all trades but that sometimes means the person isn't a master of anything.

A 'jack of all trades' it someone who has the ability to do lots of different jobs.


a) I always thought it was a big company but it's actually a one-man band.

b) Adam's print film is a one-man band. He does all his own marketing and paperwork as well as all the print work that comes in.

A 'one-man band' is a business that consists of just one person.


a) The new boss really likes to crack the whip. I don't think I've ever worked so hard.

b) You can't continually crack the whip. You'll eventually lose the support and goodwill of your employees.

If you 'crack the whip' you make people work hard, often under the threat of punishment.

To 'put your thinking cap on' means to think seriously about how to do something.

If your 'mind blank' you can't remember something.

a) That holiday was just what the doctor ordered. I feel refreshed and ready to go back to work.

If something is 'just what the doctor ordered' it is exactly what was needed.


a) The good news is grandad went to the hospital today for his check up and was given a clean bill of health.

b) I've finished the course of medicine I was given so I'm hoping I'll get a clean bill of health from the doctor.

If you are given 'a clean bill of health' you are examined and informed you are healthy.


a) I think I need to go home. I'm feeling a bit off colour.

b) Sarah's just called to say she's feeling a bit off colour so won't be coming for dinner.

If you feel 'a bit off colour' you don't feel very well.

b) I think the shop on the corner has changed hands. I saw someone putting up a new sign this morning.

If a business 'chanes hands' someone else takes ownership.


a) Their new range of summer dresses are selling like hot cake. When I arrived they'd sold out.

b) Your mum's handmade birthday cards are selling like hot cakes. Have you seen the queue of people at her stall?

If something 'sells like hot cakes' it is very popular and sells quickly.


a) The two companies have joined forces and are prepared to fight the Govenment's new regulations.

b) If we join forces with other business in the area we might be able to do something about the traffic problems.

To 'joine forces' means to work together.

a) Madeleine started the business on a shoestring but has since gone from strength to strength.

b) I've been living on a shoestring since I left home to go to university.

If someone does something 'on a shoestring' they do it with very little money.


a) The idea that many women go to work for pin money is no longer the case. More often than not, their income is just as important as their partner's.

b) I'd love to work part time for a bit of pin money rather than have to work long hours to pay the bills.
